Baños y Tena

Today marks the beginning of my last few days here in Ecuador.  It's been a crazy 14 days.  I have enjoyed this trip more than any trip, I think.  It's the first time I was truly free to be me, and not miss being someone's something back home.  With my trip to Norway, I missed being a sister, a daughter, a friend.  Even though I am still those things, I have not been homesick the way I was back then.  With Peru, I missed Aaron everyday.  I don't think I allowed myself to truly live there, because I didn't want to experience something so incredible that he wouldn't understand.  Even though I did incredible things there, and experienced some great adventures, I still missed him like crazy.  This trip though, I haven't had that.  Yes, I miss family and friends, don't get me wrong, but this has been a great time for me to just enjoy being who I want to be, and doing what I want to do without worrying about someone's feelings.  That brings me to another point that I won't get into, but we are taught at a young age that being selfish is a bad thing.  We should also be taught that it's a good thing.  It's good to take care of yourself every once in a while.  But I won't get into that today...

Thursday we left for Baños.  It is a city that is known for its adventure sports, or outdoor sports.  It's about a 4 hour bus ride, I think.  It wasn't too bad.  There are TVs in the buses and they put on a movie.  It was not crowded at all, so we were able to have two seats each and slept a little on the way there.  When we arrived, the first thing we did was walk to the bridge and I bungee jumped.  I was a little afraid at first, but after doing it, it was not as bad as I thought it would be.  In fact, I would have done it again if I had had more money and time.  It was extremely cheap.  It was only $15!!

We stayed in a little hostel.  It was nice, we had our own room and bathroom.  We met a few people, they were from France, Italy, Mexico, and the Caribbean, I think.  It was really nice and really clean, and we had wifi, so that was a plus.  :P

We went out to walk around town and get some groceries, but didn't do much the first night.  I was quite a bit tired, but we got to see some bars and places.  It's a great place to go out, but a lot of places weren't busy.

Friday we took a tour to see some waterfalls.  They were absolutely gorgeous.  There were two that we actually hiked down to.  The first was was straight down hill to get there, and straight up hill to get back.  For all of y'all who know me well, exercise does not come easy for me.  Breathing here is even more difficult.  I kept having to stop every so often to just try and get air in my lungs.  Thankfully I made it to the top before the bus left.  Majo was just able to climb up, no big thing.  Haha.  After seeing the waterfalls, we took a little bus thing to a tree house.  There is a swing there that is known as the swing at then end of the world.  I slipped and fell while on the mountain.  Thankfully it just broke my flip flop, and I didn't tumble down the cliff.  When we got to the bottom, a lady was so kind.  She gave me a free pair of flip flops.  She was worried that I was going to get sick.

That night we went back to the hostel to get our things and catch a bus to Tena.  Tena is located in the Amazon.  On the bus ride, you can see where the Amazon starts.  The trees get greener and the plants get thicker.  That bus was pretty full.  We were the last ones to get on, and there was only one seat left.  The driver gave me a little stool thing to sit on, and so I got to sit in the aisle of the bus for an hour and a half.  It wasn't bad though, I had a straight shot to see the TV.  They played Walker, Texas Ranger.  It made me laugh.  That bus ride was about three and a half hours.  We arrived in Tena around 10:30p.m. and went to a house of one of Majo's friends, and went to bed.  The next morning I got up and got ready to go white water rafting.  It was about a 30 minute hike downhill through rocks, mud, water, and soft ground.  It was an experience in itself.  My pink shoes are no longer pink.
We were on the water for about four hours, I think.  It was such a great time.  We only flipped once but got to swim in the river.  I'm sad I wasn't able to get pictures.  There were so many beautiful waterfalls and plants.  We went through a canyon.  The next day we went kayaking.  That was rough.  I fell three times, but made it.  My body is quite stiff and sore today.  I'm ready to go back and try again though.  Sadly, I won't be able to this trip.  This begins the last few days.  So off to the center I go!

 Love to all,
Emily
